Galvanising

Steel components are hot dip galvanised by immersing them in a bath of molten zinc. Although the corrosion protection is excellent, the finish can be uneven and there can be drips and spikes caused by the zinc running off as the component is removed from the bath. There can also be problems of distortion due to the high temperature of the bath. Galvanised components need to be de-gassed before coating due to a tendency to absorb moisture. Most problems associated with galvanising can be overcome by using zinc spray q.v., but the cost is normally higher. Electrogalvanising is zinc electroplating, and is a much thinner coating than HDG.
