Low temperature coatings

At low temperatures, below 5°C and increasingly so at coldroom temperatures (-20°C) and below, coatings can lose flexibility, become brittle or may shrink at a different rate to the substrate. This can cause cracking, and loss of adhesion, leaving the substrate un protected. The rate of corrosion at low temperatures may be much slower but it will happen. Some environments such as chiller rooms will have and high humidity which will accelerate corrosion. Having a cold/warm cycle or washing cold components with hot water can also cause problems. Coatings for use in cold climates need to retain flexibility and impact resistance down to temperatures as low as -48º C. Nylons and Fluoropolymers retain good flexibility at these temperatures.
